Fiddler Crab
Uca pugilator
The Fiddler Crab, scientifically known as Uca pugilator, live along the eastern seaboard and dig holes in estuaries. This organism is grouped into the domain, Eukarya and the kingdom, Animalia. The Fiddler Crab is scientifically classified into the phylum, Arthropoda and the class, Malacostraca. This organism is classified into the order, Decapoda and the family, Ocypodidae. The Fiddler Crab is classified into the genus, Uca and the species, pugilator. Fiddler Crabs prey upon worms, plants, and sand. They are preyed upon by Pigfish, racoons, and Blue Crabs. An interesting fact that I found was that the females Fiddler Crabs can eat easier than the male crabs. This organism is a heterotroph, which means that they eat plants and animals. A structural adaptation for this organism is their claws that help defend themselves from predators. Another structural adaptation for the Fiddler Crab is that they have mouths that filter detritus out of their mouths. A behavioral adaptation for this organism is that they hide in their holes to protect them from predators. Fiddler Crabs are brown with one large claw and legs that help move about.
