6-3s field trip to Grice Marine Lab
By Myla Roper
When we got
off the bus the first thing we saw was the beach. The experience of going
seining was fun. I got excited when we pulled the net back to shore and all the
little organisms were caught up in the net. The highlight of seining was when
we got to pick up the organisms off the net examining them and placing them
into the bucket. When we were finished on the beach we headed back into the bus
and proceeded to the Grice Marine Lab.
In the lab
we were shown preserved dead animals in jars. The lab assistant then pulled a
dead octopus out and started identifying the different parts of the octopus. We
were then allowed to walk around the lab and investigate close up the dead
preserved animals all by ourselves. The largest dead preserved animal I
observed was a huge fat fish in a humongous jar. After that we were taken to
the touch tank where the lab assistant explained the different parts of each
animal in the tank. That was our day in a nut shell at the Grice Marine Lab on
James Island.
