Atlantic Blue Crab- by Mia Hellman
(Callinectus sapidus)
Atlantic Blue Crab (Callinectus sapidus) live in estuaries and salt marshes. They are in the domain Eukarya, kingdom Animalia, phylum Arthropoda, class Malacostaca, order Decapoda, family Portunidae, genus Callinectus, species sapidus. They have bilateral symmetry and are a blueish brownish color. The tips of their claws are red. A functional adaptation is that its color is a murky brown/blue color to camouflage in the water. A structural adaptation is crab’s claws are sharp and can grab prey. Another structural adaptation is that crabs can also chop up their food with their pincers so they can eat it. An interesting fact is that Atlantic Blue Crab’s scientific name means “beautiful savory swimmer”. Their predators are humans and they eat fish. They are heterotrophs and they are also ectothermic.
