Brown Pelican - Mia Hellman

Brown Pelican- Mia Hellman
(Pelecanus occidentalis)

Brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) live in estuaries and southern and western sea coasts. They are in the domain Eukarya, kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, class Aves, order Pelecaniformes, family Pelecanae, genus Pelecanus, and finally, species occidentalis. They are huge stocky birds with long bills. They are a dark brown color. A structural adaptation is that its big beak can scoop up prey. A functional adaptation is when the bird dives its dark brown color helps it blend into the ecosystem. A behavioral adaptation is that it flies in V formation with other pelicans so they can ‘work together’.  An interesting fact about this organism is that the male and female build their nest together. Their predators are humans and alligators. Their prey is fish. They have bilateral symmetry, they are endothermic, and lastly, heterotrophs.
