Monarch Butterfly

Danaus plexippus

I found this on http://animaldiversity.org
Domain-  Eukarya

Kingdom- Animalia

Phylum- Arthropoda

Class- Insecta

Order- Lepidoptera

Family- Nymphalidae

Genus- Danaus

Species-Plexippus

Habitat- Is an open country species that have a range of breeding habitats.

It has bilateral symmetry, it is heterotrophic, and is endothermic. It's generally bright orange with black borders and veins and males have swollen pouches on either side of their wings. Monarch butterflies use their wings to ward off predators. They also use their poison to poison vertebrates. Like birds, they follow a pattern of seasonal migration. A known fact about monarch butterflies is that their wings seem to look like the eyes of a larger animal to predators which scares them away.  The larva of the monarch butterfly feed on a wide range of milkweeds and the adults of the species forage for flower nectar. The predators of the monarch butterfly are spiders, birds, and wasps.

spotted sandpiper

Spotted sandpiper
(Actitis macularius)
Sandpipers are usually around sea area. Their Domain is Eukarya and their Kingdom is Animalia. Their Phylum is Chordata and their Class is Aves. Their Order is Charadriiformes and their Family is Scolopacidae. The sandpiper's Genus is Actitis and their Species is Actitis macularius. They have bilateral symmetry. A behavioral adaptation is that the male raises the young. This helps them survive because the female goes to mate with other males to make the generation bigger and better. Another behavioral adaptation is during breeding season, males and females defend territory independently. this helps the animal survive because it has more territory for their young to live. another structural adaptation is their bones. their bones are hollow so they can stay in the air, flying.

Blue Crab (Callinctes Sapidus)
The scientific name of the Blue Crab is the Callinctes Sapidus. The habitat of this organism is
the saltwater areas and the estuary.
The domain-Eukarya;kingdom-Animalia;phylum-Metazoa;class-Crustacea;order-Malacostface; family-Eucarda;genus-Callinctes ;species-Sapidus. This organism has bilateral symmetry, which mean it has symmetry. The Blue Crab has blue, white, and red body. Three adaptations That the Blue Crab has are countershading, craws to protect themselves, and the can crawl fast so if they need to get away from something they can run fast. This organism is exothermic which means that whatever the temp is around them that is their temp. The prey of this animal are to eat little fish and scrapes, the predators of this animal are birds. The organism is herterotrophic which means it does not produce they are consumers. A cool fact about the Blue Crab is that the females tummy has a dome shape and the male has a pencil shape on his tummy.

Eastern Oyster
By: Raegan Propes

This organism is a Eastern Oyster also known by its scientific name Crassostrea virginica. You can find this organism along the eastern coast of North and South america, near any kind of low surface. The domain is Eukaryote, the kingdom is Animala, the phylum is mollusks, the class is Bivalvia, the order is ostreoidea, the family is Ostreidea, the genus is crassostrea, and the species is Crassostrea  virginica. This organism looks like a shell but has sharp edges and is in all sorts of different shapes. This organism filters water for food and it helps the water. (functional) This organism provides habitat for other animals. (functional) This organism also prevents erosion. (functional) A eastern oyster has bilateral symmetry, which means they can be divided into two parts that are mirror images of each other. This animal is a heterotroph (eats mostly everything and also other heterotrophs) and also is endothermic(warmblooded). This organism doesn't really have prey but when it filters water that provides it food. The prey of this organism is humans. A fun fact about this organism is that When humans eat them it gives you copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.

                                                      Brown Pelican
                                                   Pelecanus occidenalis

Habitat:  Along the Pacific Coast and the Northern Gulf of California.  They are also found in
              Mexico.
Domain:  Eukarya
Kingdom:  Animalia
Phylum:  Chordata
Class:  Aves
Order:  Pelecaniformes
Family:  Pelecanidoe
Genus:  Pelecanus
Species:  occidentalis

The Brown Pelican has bilateral symmetry.  They are gray-brown with yellow heads and white necks.  One behavioral adaptation is they feed by plunging into the water and scooping up fish with their throat pouches.  Another behavioral adaptation is when they live farther north they migrate south in the fall to find warmer weather.  A structural adaptation is that they have throat pouches to help the catch fish.  An interesting fact about the Brown Pelican is that they are the only pelicans that dive for their food.  Their predators are humans, fish crows, raccoons, bob cats, feral cats, feral dogs, American alligators, sharks, and sea lions.  Their prey are mostly small fish that form schools near the surface of the water.  They are heterotrophic and endothermic.

Brown Pelican
By: Raegan Propes

This organism is a Brown Pelican also called by its scientific name Pelecanus occidentalis. You can find this organism in any tropical water or marine coastal wetland. The domain of this organism is Eukaryote, the kingdom is Animala, the phylum is Chordata, the class is Aves, the order is Pelecaniformes, the family is Pelecanidea, the genus is Pelecanus, and the Species is Pelicans occidentalis. This organism has a orange beak, a white beat, and a brown stomach. They have a long beak due to diving for fish.(structural) This organism likes to site on something looking over the water to see when fish come by. (behavioral) Last this organism will hurt anything that comes near its nest. (behavioral) A Brown Pelican has bilateral symmetry, which means they can be divided into two parts that are mirror images of each other. This animal is a heterotroph (eats mostly everything and also other heterotrophs) and also is endothermic(warmblooded). The prey of this organism is small fish. The predators of this organism is Alligators, sharks, and humans. A fun fact about this organism is that the eyesight of this organism lets it dive from 30 meters away from the water.

Oyster Bagging Trip
A few days ago, the entire 6th grade went on a field trip to the DNR center to volunteer for score. We learned why oysters are important. Oysters are important to Charleston because they filter the water and help get the bacteria out of the water so that the water is more clean. Oysters also prevent erosion, like when a boat passes by and the over to the marsh, the oyster reef is like a barrier that helps stop the waves from passing to the shore. Oysters also are homes to many different animals that need them to keep safe from predators. The entire 6th grade worked together to make 633 bags of oysters! With all of our hard work we made enough oyster bags to make an entire reef. We will put the bags down in the spring and will wait for the oysters to reproduce and make more oysters.
